This is a reminder that you are cordially invited to attend the 2017 Commencement Ceremony honoring our graduates for 2016-2017. This includes students from Summer 2016, Fall 2016, and Spring 2017.
Date: Friday, May 12, 2017
Time: 6:30 PM.
Place: Koolau Ballrooms and Conference Center
As in previous commencement ceremonies, faculty and dignitaries will be wearing graduation regalia (either standard black or the color of your alma mater and the hood of your degree) for the ceremony. We will again also be wearing a kīhei to wear in addition to the graduation regalia.
The symbolism of the kīhei, or shawl, is to show status, also a role of importance in a ceremony. In traditional times it was used as a garment for men and women; in modern times we often use the kīhei in combination with our modern day garments as our native attire. This type of wear is seen among masters of hula, Hawaiian martial arts, healing practitioners and in educational institutions kīhei is worn by distinguished members and awarded to candidates for graduation.
Since 2013, Ke Kumu Pali has gifted distinguished faculty members kīhei as part of their regalia to honor the graduates. If you did not receive yours last year, please contact Tuti Sanborn (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Your presence conveys the tremendous aloha we feel for our students and the joyous pride we have for them and their accomplishments. If you plan to participate in the ceremony, please email Audery Badua (email@example.com) by Friday, May 5. Your names will be posted on this site.
Thank you for all you do for our students,
Kaahu Alo, Commencement Chairperson
